Teenager found hanging in cell at Glen Parva YOI

A young man has become the eighth teenager to die in custody this year after being found hanging in a cell at a young offender institution (YOI) in Leicestershire.

Christopher Neale, 19, died on Saturday at Glen Parva YOI, the Prison Service has confirmed.

A Prison Service spokesman said: "Christopher Neale was found hanging in his cell at HMYOI Glen Parva at approximately 9am on Saturday 19 November.

"Staff attempted resuscitation but he was pronounced dead at approximately 9.05am.

"As with all deaths in custody, the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."

In May CYP Now revealed that five teenagers died in custody in the space of less than five weeks between the beginning of March and mid-April, leading to calls for a review of the youth secure estate.
