Teenager found hanging at Hindley YOI

2 mins read Youth Justice
A 17-year-old has died after being found hanging at a young offender institution (YOI) that only this week attracted praise from inspectors for its safeguarding and suicide prevention work.

Jake Hardy was found at Hindley YOI in Wigan on Friday and taken to hospital, where he died yesterday (24 January).

A Prison Service spokeswoman said he was found hanging in his cell at approximately 11.45pm on 20 January.

"Staff attempted resuscitation, paramedics attended and he was taken to outside hospital but was pronounced dead at 8.05am on Tuesday January 24," she added.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) will conduct an investigation."

An unannounced inspection of Hindley, carried out in September last year and published yesterday, found that progress was being made against the healthy prison tests of safety and respect, purposeful activity and resettlement.
