Children’s sector leaders have cautiously welcomed the government’s £500m package for families amid concerns the new measures will fall short of what is needed to support hundreds of thousands of vulnerable parents and children.

The funding, due to be announced by the Chancellor in his budget and spending review on Wednesday, will be used to establish a network of “family hubs” across England that will act as “one-stop shops” for advice and guidance.

With £82m allocated for the new centres expected to launch in 75 local authorities, a further £100m will be spent on mental health support for new and expectant parents.

Around £200m of the total package will go towards supporting 300,000 of the most vulnerable families at risk of experiencing a breakdown due to their complex issues.

But charities including the Children’s Society and the NSPCC are warning further measures are needed to prevent children and their families from reaching crisis point in the first place.
