Somerford Grove scoops top prize in playground awards

Somerford Grove Adventure Playgound in Haringey has scooped the top prize in the London Play awards but it is still struggling to get funding for its long-term sustainability, according to the body which runs it.

It will receive its award at a celebration on October 9 at the Unicorn Theatre near Tower Bridge after winning the London Play Adventure Playground of the Year Award. The runners up were Honor Oak Adventure Playground in Brockley and Slade Gardens Adventure Playground in Stockwell.

Nick Jackson, director of Haringey Play Association which runs the Somerford Grove play facility, expressed his delight at winning the award. But he added: “Unfortunately we are still struggling to obtain the funding we need for the long term sustainability of the adventure playground.

“But this award gives us renewed vigour and affirms our commitment to providing the best play environment possible for the children and young people we work with.”

Children from last year’s winning playground, Glamis Road in Tower Hamlets, were on the panel of judges who visited all the short-listed adventure playgrounds and made the selection.

Chair of London Play Melian Mansfield said the playground offers opportunities for play which are “vital for healthy lives and not available elsewhere, access is free and the whole community is involved in many ways”.
