Social Care News: Looked-after children - Placement cost toolunveiled

A tool to enable local authorities to measure accurately the costs of placements for looked-after children has been launched.

The Centre for Child and Family Research at Loughborough University hasdeveloped the cost calculator after consultation and trials with localauthorities.

Harriet Ward, the centre's director, said: "It enables councils to costplacements and all the activity carried out to support children in theseplacements, such as the costs of administration."

The cost calculator will also enable children's services to comparecosts for looked-after children and plot trends. For example, it canproduce figures on annual costs and costs for different groups ofchildren according to needs, gender, age, placement type orprovider.

A demonstration version of the tool can be downloaded free from thecentre's web site.
