The east London businessman, who received a knighthood in 2016 for his philanthropic work, formed the Jack Petchey Foundation in 1999 to support a range of youth causes and charities across London and Essex, benefiting 11-to 25-year-olds.

The Foundation announced "with great sadness" that he passed away peacefully at his home in Wapping in the early hours of June 27.

Tributes have been left on social media, with Overton Grange School saying the work of the Foundation “has contributed so much to life in our school”.

Our many condolences to the family and friends of Sir Jack Petchey. The work of his @JPFoundation
has contributed so much to life in our school.
