Scout Association launches campaign to save groups from 'crippling' rent increases

A national campaign has been launched to protect local Scout groups against massive increases in rents and rates.

The Scout Association has called on councils to take steps to protect local groups as it started the Don’t Raise Our Rents! campaign.

Traditionally, councils have only charged nominal rents for the land on which Scout buildings are based. But cuts to local authorities have resulted in councils using new ways to create revenue.

At least 2,000 Scout groups will be affected by the rent increase, which could lead to them reducing outdoor activities, increasing subscriptions or even closing.

CYP Now reported in February that the Scout Association chief executive had warned that the rent hikes compromised the government’s big society agenda.
