Scottish charities bid for Future Jobs Fund money

The charity sector in Scotland is coming together to bid for 47.5m of Future Jobs Fund money to provide work for 7,500 young people.

The Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is organising a joint bid to apply for half of the £95m being made available through the fund to help 18- to 24-year-olds in Scotland.

Those taking part will offer six-month posts over an 18-month period and include Citizen's Advice Scotland, Community Recycling Network Scotland, Enable and the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations.

An SCVO spokesman said: "This is an opportunity to show the breadth of work and opportunity within the charity sector. Jobs will cover diverse areas such as mentoring, construction and environmental projects."

A total of £3.1bn of Future Jobs Fund money has been made available UK-wide, a third of which has been earmarked for jobs for young people.

Lucy McTernan, SCVO deputy chief executive, added: "The recession means charities and voluntary organisations are facing a decline in income, just when their services are needed the most. Unemployment is rising and it is becoming harder for young people in Scotland to find work.
