Abolition of Future Jobs Fund could contribute to long-term unemployment, MPs warn

A group of MPs has warned that scrapping the Future Jobs Fund risks consigning young people to long-term unemployment.

The decision to scrap the fund is analysed in the committee’s report Youth Unemployment and the Future Jobs Fund.

The committee makes a total of 23 recommendations to government, including calls for proper transitional arrangements to be put in place.

Helen Donohoe, Action for Children’s director of public policy, described the end of the Future Jobs Fund, created by the previous Labour government, as "yet another blow to the to the hopes and prospects of the most vulnerable young people".

"Following the end of the child trust fund for children in care and the likely abolition of the education maintenance allowance, Action for Children is gravely concerned about the impact of withdrawing support focused on employment when it is needed most," she said.
