Scotland launches scheme to help overweight children

Health boards in Scotland are being asked to run weight treatment programmes for overweight five- to 15-year-olds.

The £6m government scheme is the latest in a series of initiatives designed to improve the health of children and young people in the country.

The treatment programmes will promote exercise and healthy eating, using a family-oriented approach to address the causes of health problems. They will seek to work with around 20,000 children.

Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "While the growing problem of obesity - and in particular childhood obesity - is affecting all sectors of society, we know that the health impacts can be a particular problem in deprived areas."
