Scots to fight obesity with free fruit

Early Years Health
Pregnant women and pre-school children in Scotland are to be given free fruit in a government scheme to combat obesity.

The initiative is part of a £40m health improvement drive, which includes £15m to tackle obesity.

The Scottish Government has also set itself a target to reduce the number of children who are outside the healthy weight range by 2018.

Nicola Sturgeon, the cabinet secretary of health and wellbeing, said: "Obesity is an increasing problem and poses a very serious threat to our nation's health.

"That is why we have made tackling obesity, particularly in early life, a key priority."

The Scottish Government is due to publish an action plan on healthy weight, physical activity, and healthy eating later in the year.
