Schools urged to protect children's playtime

1 min read Play Education
London Play has warned that giving schools the freedom to decide on the length and structure of their day could lead to a reduction in unstructured playtime for children.

Measures announced this week by the Department for Education mean that all local authority maintained schools will now have the same powers as foundation and voluntary aided schools as well as academies, which are able to choose how their school days are structured without applying to make changes.

The government said the measure will mean all schools will now be freed from the requirement to apply for any changes, such as increasing or decreasing the lunch break, a process that can sometimes take up to three months.

But London Play has warned that schools will be tempted to increase the amount of study time in the day at the expense of playtime.
