According to a study commissioned by the college, school leaders have a "moral imperative" to entrench sustainability learning in schools.
The research warns that school children today will face challenges in 20 years time that include the serious impacts of climate change, fewer natural resources and a more populous world.
It claims that a new style of leadership, which prioritises sustainability joint working, is necessary to prepare pupils for the future.
Toby Salt, deputy chief executive of NCSL, said schools should make sustainable development a key part of school improvement plans.
He advised senior staff to work with other organisations in their local area to encourage a step change in the way communities tackle sustainability issues.
