Save the Children imports US scheme to help families

1 min read Social Care
Child poverty charity Save the Children is introducing a 12m scheme to the UK, based on a US programme which has dramatically improved the lives of poor children.

Families and Schools Together (Fast) is based in schools and designed to help families from deprived communities to learn together and improve their relationships.

Fast helps families learn to cook a family meal and sit down to eat together and coaches parents to read and play with their children. It also supports parents in setting family boundaries and talking to their children.

The Fast scheme has already proven successful in the US, where researchers who surveyed 10,000 children from 2004 to 2008 found that 84 per cent of teachers reported improvements in pupils' academic performance. The research also suggested that in 67 per cent of families, the relationships between the parents and the children had improved.
