Childcare to help families get work

1 min read Early Years
Poor families are to be offered free childcare through a 75m government scheme so they can learn new skills to find jobs.

The Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work programme will offer to pay the childcare costs of 50,000 low income families in England where one parent is working and the other wants to train so they can get a job.

From next month an advertising campaign to make families aware of the programme, which will be run by the Learning and Skills Council, will be launched through Sure Starts, children's centres, GPs and job centres. The programme will be available in 67 local authorities from January 2009 before being extended to every English council in September 2009.

Childcare costs of up to £175 per week per child - £205 per week in London - will be paid by the programme. The money will go directly to the childcare provider and applies to children up to the age of 14.
