Salford rubberstamps plans to cut youth budget by further 1.3m

Cuts of 1.3m to youth services have been signed off by politicians in Salford, taking the total reduction to 3m in the past two years.

The cuts represent part of an overall reduction of £24m across the council in 2012/13 with projections showing a further £38m of cuts will be necessary in the following two years.

The £1.3m cut to youth services will result in "reduced provision in localities" as well as "significant reductions in careers and employment advice to more than 6,000 young people", the council has said.

In addition to youth services, there has been a reduction of £200,000 in direct support to the voluntary sector in providing services to tackle family poverty, and a reduction of £479,000 in transport for children with special needs.

Bill Hinds, lead member for finance within the Labour administration at Salford City Council, said free childcare to Salford’s most vulnerable two-year-old children will be maintained.
