Salford shelves plans to slash deaf children's services

1 min read
Salford Council has postponed plans to cut local deaf children's services, after 4,000 people signed a petition set up by parents and the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS).

The council was proposing to halve the number of specialist teachers of the deaf and specialist teaching assistant posts.

But John Merry, leader of Salford City Council, said the plans have been put on hold so the authority can fully consult parents on the service restructure.

"We do need to look at how we best support young people with a wide range of special educational needs in the city," he explained. "But it is also incredibly important we maintain the services we are already doing well.

"This is not about cutting the budget, it is about making sure the money we have available to us is best spent."
