Public benefit guidance for charities

Education
The Charity Commission is to publish final guidance for education charities on how to prove they meet latest public benefit requirements by the end of the year.

The presumption that charities in the sector work for the public benefit was scrapped through the 2006 Charities Act. They now have to prove they are of public benefit to be considered a charity.

Following a consultation on the issue, final guidance is due to be released by Christmas. This is likely to highlight the importance of independent schools being a "community resource" as well as a place of learning.

Innovative teaching and providing activities that advance education, is also set to be a requirement. Responses to the consultation from education charities suggested an example of this could be teaching children about blogging.
