In the wake of four former professional footballers coming forward this week about abuse they suffered as youngsters, Andy Elvin, chief executive of The Adolescent and Children's Trust (Tact), told CYP Now that the modern game is a "high-risk arena" in terms of child protection.
He highlights the English academy system, which is currently made up of around 12,500 players, and specifically those run by Premier League clubs, as an area of concern.
Elvin said there has been an "unwelcome growth", especially at Premier League level, of children being moved away from home to attend academies, including children being brought to the UK from overseas.
