Police deny halting screening of gang culture movie

Youth Justice
West Midlands Police has denied its officers are behind a national cinema chain's decision not to screen a movie in Birmingham about the city's gang culture.

The spokeswoman for the Odeon has said it will not screen the film One Day at its Birmingham cinema "following advice from West Midlands Police". The film will be screened at its other cinemas nationwide.

However, a spokesman for West Midlands Police has denied any such advice was issued.

Media reports had suggested an officer might have approached local cinemas independently. The police spokesman added: "There is absolutely no evidence that happened."

The Odeon has refused to issue any further comment about the screening of the film, which centres on two inner city gangs and was filmed in the Handsworth area of the city, featuring local people.
