May outlines plan to combat gang culture

1 min read Youth Justice
Attempts to tackle gang culture in England will focus on early intervention, partnership working and tougher punishment, Home Secretary Theresa May has revealed.

Speaking in the House of Commons, May said the government’s report into ending youth and gang violence will be based on five areas: prevention, pathways out, punishment, partnership working and providing support.

It will include the creation of an ending gangs and youth violence team, made up of community activists, NHS experts and police officers who will help affected areas develop their own solutions, which could include mediation schemes to prevent retaliatory violence.

Meanwhile, £1.2m of new funding will be used to improve services for young victims of sexual violence in major urban areas over the next three years in a bid to help young women and girls caught up in gang-related rape and abuse.
