Playgrounds to go smoke-free

A London borough is to ban smoking in its playgrounds.

Sutton Council has approved a trial ban at children’s play areas in Beddington Park and, if successful, the restrictions will be introduced through the south London borough.

Signs will go on display at the playground to inform smokers of the ban and police and police community support officers will enforce the restrictions.

But the ban isn’t legally enforceable and the council will need to rely on smokers’ cooperation.

Liberal Democrat councilor Bruce Glithero said: “The main reason people go to the park is to enjoy some fresh air and this move aims to protect that.”

It follows a similar scheme introduced in Exeter last October.
