Ferret racing was one of the more bizarre activities on offer to children as part of this year's national Playday.

The racing took place in Regent's Park in London, where Westminster City Council held its Playday celebrations.

Play England, which organises Playday, estimates that there were more than 800 organised free events taking place across the UK on 5 August. These included circus skills lessons in Cardiff and scavenger hunts in Dudley, while in Exeter the local authority built a cardboard city for children to play in.

Children's minister Dawn Primarolo marked the day by announcing that 300,000 children will benefit from new and redeveloped play areas this summer, as a result of the government's £235m play strategy. She claimed that 530 play areas have been developed since the strategy began last year, with another 3,000 due by 2011.
