Play recommendations short-change children says expert

1 min read Education
New recommendations on the role of play in the school curriculum are "short-changing children" according to one play expert.

The interim report of an independent review of primary school education headed by Sir Jim Rose, published yesterday, calls for wider opportunities for play-based activities within the curriculum, particularly in the transitional period from early years to primary.

But Dr.Ute Navidi, chief executive of London Play, said play was too often linked with learning. "The two things are different: one is children deciding freely where, how and with whom to play and when to stop - the other is a method of delivering educational targets, albeit in a more accessible and engaging manner," she said.

"With so many pressures on children's time, and schools cutting back on free play opportunities during break times, it looks as if children are being short-changed yet again."
