Play body publishes guidance for councils

1 min read Early Years
The Association of Play Industries (API) has published guidance to help "steer and support" local authorities in delivering the government's national play strategy.

The trade body represents the interests of manufacturers, installers, designers and distributors of both outdoor and indoor play equipment and safer surfacing. The guidance, published today, offers recommendations to ensure authorities are making the most of government funding.

The £235m strategy will see 3,500 natural play areas across England built or developed, along with 30 new adventure playgrounds. The first 500 areas were unveiled in Easter, and authorities now have until March 2011 to get the remaining 3,000 up and running.

Michael Hoenigmann, an API's executive member, said: "The API is in a unique position to share its experience gained over the past year, having worked in partnership with local authorities to deliver new and refurbished playgrounds. We have built up a considerable amount of knowledge and we want this to benefit local authorities embarking on the delivery of phase two."
