Petition calls for LGBT school plans to be scrapped

1 min read Education Youth Work
A campaigner has launched a petition urging a youth work charity to rethink its plans to establish the UK's first ever school for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people.

LGBT Youth North West last week announced plans to open a school in Manchester, initially catering for around 40 full-time pupils who are struggling in mainstream education.

While the school would primarily be for LGBT young people, the charity has said that it would open its doors to any other children who want to attend.

However, in her online petition Tara Hewitt warns that the proposal would further segregate LGBT young people and harm their overall wellbeing.

She wants the charity to scrap its plans and instead focus its efforts on inclusive education.

Hewitt’s petition states: “We need to highlight schools of whatever type that have examples of best practice for stopping all bullying and ensure that other schools follow their lead.
