Statistics released in Parliament by justice minister Maria Eagle showthat on 26 June this year there were a total of 2,660 children aged 17or under in the youth secure estate in England and Wales.
Of these, 1,176 (44 per cent) were under sentence for crimes ofviolence, 855 (32 per cent) were under sentence for non-violent crimesand 635 (24 per cent) were on remand, which may include those held onremand for non-violent offences.
The statistics were released as a response to a question posed by SallyKeeble, MP for Northampton North.
Penelope Gibbs, director of the Prison Reform Trust's campaign to reducethe number of children and young people in custody, said locking upnon-violent young offenders does not work.
