Statistics revealed in parliament show that 55 out of 157 YOT areas experienced an increase in the youth-remand custody rate between 2007 and 2008.
There was an overall decline in England and Wales, but the pace of the fall is still slow. In 2008, there were 4,402 young people remanded in custody, just 256 fewer than in 2007 and 663 fewer than 2004's figures.
One of the areas to show the steepest increase was Kent, which saw a rise of 29 between 2007 and 2008, to take its total to 80. In Greenwich the figures increased from 30 to 48, and in Wessex from 128 to 151 during the same period
Areas that have shown a significant fall between 2007 and 2008 include Birmingham, where the number of young people remanded in custody fell from 176 to 144, and Kingston-upon-Hull, where rates fell from 83 to 49.
