Ombudsman criticises council for failing to implement recommendations

Bury Metropolitan Borough Council has been reprimanded by the local government watchdog for failing to act quickly enough to implement recommendations to resolve disputes involving vulnerable young people.

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGO) said it had been “compelled” to highlight two cases where Bury MBC had failed to “put things right in good time”.

In the first case, the council agreed to update its transport to education policy for young adults with special educational needs after it was judged to have failed to provide woman's a 19-year-old son with transport to college. Despite previous assurances that a stakeholder consultation on the revised policy would be completed by Easter 2023, the council says the process has taken longer than anticipated and won’t now be done until April at the earliest.
