Staffordshire County Council’s children’s services have been downgraded by Ofsted due in part to concerns over its care leaver offer, including the placement of young people in "unsuitable short-term accommodation".

The council was criticised by Ofsted in its latest inspection report for a “deterioration” in the standards of its children’s services, particularly in relation to its care leaver offer and a lack of “a comprehensive approach to supervision and management oversight”.

Services for care leavers were rated as "requires improvement" with inspectors saying this was "due to aspects of the offer to care leavers being wanting, such as the use of unsuitable short-term accommodation for some young people, which makes them more vulnerable, and difficulties in accessing the right health services at the right time”.

The council's children's services were previously rated as "good" following a 2019 inspection, but were handed a rating of "requires improvement" after a visit in November last year.
