Steve Hill, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, yesterday said there should be specially targeted health services for young people aged between 16 and 18.
Fiona Blacke, chief executive of the NYA, said: "There have been some excellent initiatives developed by the Department of Health and others to help address the issues identified by RCGP, including the national scheme to make health services young people friendly, called You're Welcome. We would like to see all GPs and hospital trusts sign up to this scheme, which empowers young people to influence and improve the services they receive."
She added that the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health was about to launch an e-learning training package that would also "help to ensure a greater joining up of services around young people".
