NYA reveals youth work training changes

Youth work training is to be overhauled from next year to tackle recruitment and retention challenges facing the sector.
NYA director of youth work and deputy chief executive Abbee McLatchie said reform was 'imperative' for meeting demand for youth workers

The reforms aim to create “a more coherent, inclusive and progressive qualifications system”, according to the National Youth Agency, which has announced the changes following a six-month consultation period that ended last month.

Ensuring there is a “clear progression route” from entry to degree level is a focus of the changes, which will see the introduction of a Higher National Diploma (HND) and a Higher National Certificate (HNC) at Levels 4 and 5.

There will also be a greater recognition of youth work experience and strengthening skills needed in the role “not just general employment skills”.

In addition, Level 6+ undergraduate degree, degree apprenticeships and post graduate courses will continue.
