The National Youth Agency has launched the consultation on changes to the youth work qualification framework due to a lack of trained youth workers.

Of the 21,150 youth workers in England in 2023 just 4,350 have degree level trained professional youth workers status and only 4,200 have Level 2 and 3 training as youth support workers.

Instead, the youth services workforce is dominated by volunteers, with 14,350 working in the sector, excluding volunteers with uniformed groups.

Changes to qualifications include “more accessible routes” to training and a modular approach to qualifications to help youth workers to “build their learning across their career”, it says.
