Nick Gibb appointed schools minister

Education
The Tory schools spokesman Nick Gibb has been appointed as schools minister in the Liberal-Conservative coalition government's new Department for Education.

Gibb, the MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, is a stong supporter of the synthetic phonics method of teaching children to read and write.

He has five years' experience dealing with education policies for the Conservatives, first as shadow education minister, then as shadow minister for schools.

Prior to that, Gibb was a frontbench spokesman on trade and industry and Treasury matters.

More ministerial appointments to follow.
