New ADCS president calls for review of children’s mental health services

Steve Crocker, director of children’s services at Hampshire County Council and Isle of Wight Council, urged the government to carry out the review in his inaugural presidential address earlier today (6 April).

After sharing his views on the recent SEND green paper and schools white paper, and the upcoming review of children’s social care, Crocker said: “You might think we’ve got enough to contend with, well, I’d like to make an opening pitch for a further national review, of children’s mental health services.”

“Radical reform” is needed to improve mental health support for children, Crocker told an audience of MPs and sector leaders at the Museum of London, stating that the current system is “too rooted in clinical diagnostics, adrift from the child-centred, whole family and relationships-based working”.
