Catch22, the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and Bolton Lads & Girls Club are among 19 organisations to win contracts to run National Citizen Service (NCS) pilots next year.

In announcing the successful bidders, civil society minister Nick Hurd said next year’s pilots will see a trebling in the number of places available.

Others selected to run pilots for this community volunteering and activity scheme for 16-year-olds are The Football League Trust, The University of the First Age and Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade.

Hurd said: "I’m delighted we can begin to roll this out further and move towards the government’s ultimate goal to make this a rite of passage and give every 16-year-old the chance to get involved.

"The 2011 participants will undoubtedly reap the rewards of their hard work this summer and go on inspired to achieve great things."

Earlier this month it emerged that around a quarter of the 11,000 NCS places available this year could not be filled.

Among those unable to fill all their places was a project in Prime Minister David Cameron’s Witney constituency run by Oxfordshire Association for Young People.

Just 15 young people took part despite it being initially oversubscribed with 35 signing up for its 30 places.
