
Lisa Nandy, MP for Wigan, said it is vital to support young people to access work and training opportunities available to them if youth unemployment rates are to be driven down.
“There is a huge issue about meeting costs to make sure young people can go to work,” she said at a Work Foundation fringe event on why young people fail to make the transition from school to work, at Labour’s annual conference.
“The apprenticeship wage is £2.68 an hour but a lot of young people say they can’t get there because of travel costs. These practical things are real issues.
“If you don’t have a fund to tackle that, even if you create those opportunities, lots of young people aren’t going to be able to take them up.”
