Figures obtained in a Freedom of Information request show 1,931 (37.7 per cent) of the 5,122 children in care in the area as of September 2014 had been placed outside their local area.
The Children's Society said some cases involved moving children for their own safety, however in other cases children were moved because their local authority could not find a closer home.

Young people told the national charity they had been left isolated, while others were forced to switch schools after being moved.
The research also highlighted a lack of contact with support staff following the move.
