It found there are almost 18,000 looked-after children placed far from their support networks and this number is growing.

Over the last six years, 3,000 more children are being placed more than 20 miles from their home.

In the most extreme cases some children are being placed more than 500 miles from their home.

The charity concedes that in some cases there can be legitimate reasons why children in care are moved miles from their home area, such as to safeguard them from criminal or sexual exploitation or abuse or to move closer to wider family members or when a child wants to move away.
