Mobilise youth workers to help young people ease out of lockdown, NYA says

Youth workers must be mobilised to deliver summer activities and support young people, including the most vulnerable, as they prepare to return to education, the National Youth Agency (NYA) has said.

The regulatory body for youth work said the move formed part of a proposed package of support which would see youth centres re-open and youth workers classified as key workers.

The recommendations, set out in its latest report, Time out: Re-imagining schools - A youth work response to Covid-19, are aimed at supporting young people, some of which could have been out of school for six months by September.

For these children, including those vulnerable young people described as “off the radar”, the measures would help tackle concerns over their attainment and emotional wellbeing, the NYA said.
