Minister claims GCSE target will be met by next year

1 min read Education
Schools minister Vernon Coaker has claimed that no school will have fewer than 30 per cent of pupils achieving five GCSEs grades A* to C by next year, as a result of the government's National Challenge initiative.

Speaking at the North of England Education Conference, he told delegates that the controversial scheme to raise standards in underperforming schools was proving a great success.

"In 1997 one out of every two schools was not reaching the benchmark of 30 per cent of pupils getting five good GCSEs, including English and Maths," he said. "We're now at the point where we are expecting just one in 12 to fall short of that benchmark - around 270 as opposed to 1,600. With further investment going in, and the hard work of heads, teachers and school support staff, we're confident that figure will hit zero by next year."
