Lottery funding has boosted play, finds report

1 min read Early Years
Local authorities have increased play opportunities for deprived and disabled children as a result of a 123m Big Lottery-funded play programme, according to the latest research.

The findings were revealed in an evaluation of the Big Lottery Fund's Children's Play Programme, which has provided three-year grants to local authorities to establish free, unstructured play for children from deprived or traditionally hard-to-reach communities.

Since its inception in 2006, the programme has funded 1,400 council-led projects.

Research and consultancy firm Ecotec has been assessing the impact of the programme since 2008, as part of a three-year evaluation. Early findings, published last week, show that 82 per cent of projects funded by the programme have increased the number of children and young people accessing play.
