London mayor's report states case for early years investment

1 min read Early Years
Local authorities in London need to focus their spending on early years services in order to improve children's lives and save money, according to a forthcoming report from the London mayor.

The report, Early Years Interventions to Address Health Inequalities in London – The Economic Case, which is due out on 14 January, argues that investing in early years programmes can have significant benefits in terms of health, education, crime and other outcomes.

It states that the case for early years investment is even greater in London as the child population (aged 0 to 4) is projected to increase by 11.6 per cent between 2008 and 2033, more than any other English region. The report authors estimate that the cost of teenage pregnancy is approximately £231m a year, which could be substantially reduced if further investment was directed towards early years services and "getting it right first time".
