In London, 30 per cent of local authority controlled schools are now judged to be outstanding, compared with 17.5 per cent nationally.
In addition, only 2.4 per cent of London secondary schools are inadequate, compared with 4.1 per cent in the rest of England and 9.5 per cent of academies.
Ofsted credits London Challenge advisers, who are independent, experienced education experts, with supporting much of the improvement in schools.
These advisers successfully established school improvement partnership boards for schools causing concern, carried out accurate audits of needs and brokered the resources necessary to meet those needs, the report said.
Networks of school leaders from the London Challenge Leadership Strategy also provided expertise to tackle the development needs within supported schools and improvements were achieved through partnerships where "teaching schools" have coached groups of teachers from other schools.
