The standard of physical education (PE) in primary and secondary schools is improving and pupils are doing better, according to a report by Ofsted.

A survey carried out by Ofsted concluded that pupils' achievement was "good or outstanding" in two-thirds of primary schools and in around three-quarters of secondary schools.

The survey of 99 primary schools and 84 secondary schools also highlighted an "improving trend in teaching and standards" in schools.

Ofsted said that pupils were taking part in a wider range of activities including mountain biking, dance, martial arts and yoga.

The majority of schools provide the expected two hours of physical education per week, except at Key Stage 4 where provision in half of secondary schools "fell short".

But the report said assessment of pupils' achievement was weak in both primary and secondary schools.
