Youth Rehabilitation Orders, which came into effect today (30 November), offer judges and magistrates a choice of punishment and rehabilitation programmes for young offenders.
This includes community work, which local people will have a say on in a pilot involving 18 youth offending teams in the north west of England. If successful this public involvement element will be rolled out across England and Wales next year.
It is anticipated that many of the ideas from residents will include repairing acts of vandalism and cleaning graffiti. Ideas can be submitted online to the Youth Justice Board, which is developing the scheme.
A spokeswoman for the Youth Justice Board said that the resident's opinion element will be promoted by youth offending teams through advertising and the local media.
