The Adolescent and Children’s Trust (TACT), the UK’s largest dedicated fostering charity, has urged whichever party wins the 4 July general election to “launch a comprehensive and long-term foster carer recruitment campaign”.

The campaign should include “a headline initiative to recruit and retain foster carers, such as forgiving council tax for all registered foster carers”.

The call has been made in the charity’s own election manifesto.

It comes after latest figures from the Department for Education, show just 125,195 initial applications were received by local authorities and independent foster agencies in 2022/23 – the lowest level since current records began in 2017/18.
