
The charity’s annual recruitment campaign takes place throughout September and is this year focusing on the urgent need for carers due to a rapid rise in referrals to its services.
Between August 2021 and July this year the number of referrals to the charity’s fostering services was 19,996, an increase of 28 per cent on the previous year’s figure.
The charity also warns that many of its current group of carers are looking to retire. Barnardo’s says that the majority of its carers are aged 55 and older.
“With record numbers of children in need of care and support, we urgently need more people to consider becoming foster carers,” said Barnardo’s chief executive Lynn Perry.
