Labour Conference: Teachers caught in a "climate and culture of blame", says NAHT

The president of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has told delegates at the Labour Party conference that teachers are being de-skilled by the National Curriculum.

Clarrisa Williams said the current generation of teachers are constricted by a climate of culture and blame and that teaching to the test is reducing teachers’ ability to interact with pupils.

She said: As a profession we are prevented from doing what we should. We have a generation of teachers who are less skilled.

Andy Powell, chief executive of education charity Edge, blamed constant changes in the curriculum for preventing teachers from performing at their best. The big problem for teachers is that they have to constantly adapt, he said. It’s hugely challenging to teachers because there isn’t a pedagogy for how you do this. There are all sorts of barriers.
