Intergenerational work: Capital's councils to bid for 1.5m

London boroughs are being invited to bid for a 1.5m grant to build the capital's first intergenerational centre.

This new type of centre will be created through children's centre planning but will be home to a range of services for children, families, teenagers and older people.

Denise Burke, head of childcare at the London Development Agency, which will fund the centre through a capital grant, said: "What we are not looking for is just a children's centre with bolt-on services for the elderly."

She said the centre aimed to break down barriers between generations as well as between adult and children's services professionals.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 8 October. A decision on the successful applicant will be made in early 2008.
